A brief round the island tour of Lefkada's resorts

Lefkas Town

Most visitors to Lefkas visit Lefkas Town at some point.

It is a great place to wander around - access is difficult for traffic.

For the day time, there are shops and several museums.

At night, the main square comes alive to become a great place to sit with a drink and watch the world go by.

Lefkas Town is also featured on an FoI self-guided trail.

See the shop page for details of how to download one.

Nidri

Somewhat of a busy strip development that runs along the main road to Lefkas Town, Nidri is not short of bars and nightlife.

There are beaches are just outside of town.

The view out to sea of an early morning is quite spectacular with metallic blue sea broken only by the handful of tiny islands offshore, one of which is Scorpios, the Onassis island.

From the port, boats depart for the nearby islet of Meganisi and you can also get the early morning Captain Aristithes to Frikes on Ithaca and Fiscardo on Kefalonia.

Egremnoi and Porto Katsiki

Rated as two of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, Egemnoi and Porto Katsiki really are breathtaking with their turquoise sea and white sand.

Both are situated on the south west coast but beware, they are not so easy to get down to.

There are 300 steps down to Egremnoi and Porto Katsiki isn't all that easy either.

You can, alternatively, take a boat trip to the latter island.

Karia

The largest of Lefkada's mountain villages, Karia is definitely worth a visit.

Have a wander around or visit the Folkloric Museum.

Or if you just feel like a well-earned rest, pull up a chair under the Plane trees of the main square and order yourself a beer in some truly different surroundings, looking out across Lefkas to the mainland.

Meganisi

This tiny islet is a place to come and get away from it all and can feel a little like taking a step back in time.

Having said that, the streets of the main villages do have a lively feel of an evening.

There are a couple of bays for swimming on the far side of the island.

There are daily ferries from Nidri.

See Top Trips page for more details.

The village of Katomeri is also featured on an FoI self-guided trail - see the shop page for details of how to download one.

Kalamitsi and Drimonas

Originally built out of the reach of pirates, these two villages, on the north west of the island, have a most definitely Greek feel to them.

What makes these villages immediately interesting is the beautiful stone houses which almost sink into the surrounding groves of almond and olive.

Kalimisti was once a much larger settlement and was home to the island's second school in the nineteenth century.

Lefkas's thirteen mills still stand in the surrounding area.

Both villages have cafenions and a few places to get food.

Spend a few hours in the cool of either of the villages in an all together tranquil Lefkas.

Agios Nikitas

One of Lefkas' most attractive resorts, grown from a tiny fishing village.

Tucked away into a knuckle of the the west coast, the village centres around its tiny harbour.

Just up the coast, the famous idyllic beach of Kathisma is a great place to watch the sun go down.

Agios Nikitas is featured on an FoI self-guided trail - see the shop page for details of how to download one.

Sivota

Sivota is a picturesque fishing port, set at the end of a long, thin bay on the south east coast of Lefkas.

It makes for a very attractive place to spend a balmy evening at one of the village's fish tavernas.

You will probably need a car to get there.

Vassiliki

Set at the head of a huge horseshoe bay, Vassiliki is fairly attractive resort but it can get quite busy in the summer months.

Alongside Nidri, it is the biggest resort on the island, centred around its cafe and taverna-lined harbour.

Famed for its strong afternoon winds, the Vassiliki bay attracts many a sailor and is fast becoming a Mecca for windsurfers.
